When food and art collide, the results are often deliciously provocative. From bananas to soup cans, here’s how everyday edibles became formidable works of art

EVERYDAY ICONS Andy Warhol famously elevated the humble Campbell’s soup can to an iconic symbol of pop art in 1962. Titled Campbell’s Soup Cans, His 32 canvases—each featuring a different soup flavour—commented on mass consumption while turning everyday food into high art. BITTERSWEET CRITIQUE In 2014, American artist Kara Walker unveiled A Subtlety, also called Marvelous Sugar Baby, consisting of a giant sugarcoated sculpture of a sphinx-like woman. The piece, shown in the old Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, New York, was a biting commentary on colonialism, slavery and the sugar trade, and subtitled “an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining…
