A man hotels are something of a phenomenon; so much so that it even has a cult-like following that is the envy of its peers in the industry—its loyalists are known unofficially as “Aman junkies”. The story of Aman began in Phuket, when its first resort, Amanpuri, opened in 1988. It immediately set a new global standard for luxury hotels with its understated elegance and dedicated yet ultra-discreet service, and remains the exemplification of luxury hospitality to this day. At the time, Phuket was something of an outlier on the global tourism map—a distant, undeveloped isle far removed from mainstream destinations.
