From a hastily daubed tag to beautifully elaborate paintings to stencils that call for change, street art has many functions. But no matter how vibrant they are, it is inherently temporary, especially in Hong Kong—thanks to the city’s climate and fast rate of building renewal. While initiatives like HKWalls, a non-profit street art festival founded in 2014, promote the artform, photographers like Alex Unrein preserve it. Growing up not far from the Berlin Wall, she internalised street art’s importance in a city’s culture from an early age. In 2010, she moved to Hong Kong, and started leading street art tours, while snapping images for her Instagram feed, @streetartorama.
