Hong Kong jeweller Austy Lee draws influence from the elegant weaponry of bygone ages

Switzerland today may be famous for its political neutrality but this wasn’t always the case. From the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance era, fierce Swiss soldiers were highly in demand as mercenaries. Praised for their gallantry and military skills, they were paid handsomely to fight under the banner of any nation that could afford them. One of their preferred weapons was a single-edged sword which today is referred to as a Swiss sabre. During the early days of use, the blades were set in fairly conventional sword hilts. However, perhaps inspired by the artistic glories of the Renaissance, hilt forms in the late 16th century became more ornate, adorned with precious metals and featuring sculptural forms such as animal motifs on the pommels.
