Johnson Chiang, who served as chairman of Hong Kong Society of Illustrators from 2014 to 2016, has a special fondness for dogs. “My neighbour used to have a rough collie when I was a child. We were each other’s best friends, and we would play every day,” he says. “One day, it disappeared. I learnt that my neighbour abandoned the dog for a newborn baby.” This inspired Chiang to create the mongrel dog, or tong gau, character John Dog, and use his art to speak up on their behalf. “Mongrel dogs hang out around streets and lanes.
