TAI HANG’S DANCE OF THE FIRE DRAGON during Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most eagerly anticipated annual traditions in Hong Kong, and a new heritage centre plans to commemorate Hakka cultural heritage and commemorate the area’s iconic fiery mascot even after the joss stick ash has been swept from the streets. The grade III-listed Hung Shing Yi Hok, or “Confucius free school for the poor” building at 12 School Street, is being turned into the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Heritage Centre by the Tai Hang Residents’ Welfare Association, to the tune of HK$36 million. Despite the building’s period features being preserved during revitalisation, the interior will feature modern technology, like augmented and virtual reality, to immerse visitors.
