Austy Lee’s newest creations showcase the ancient art of Japanese maki-e lacquer alongside extraordinary gemstones

Hong Kong jewellery designer Austy Lee is renowned for the bright colours and optimistic mood of his creations. Drawing influences from such diverse sources as punk rock, the Nordic gods, ancient Japan and the exotic blooms of the natural world, Lee is perhaps most deeply affected by the 1960s counterculture movement. He says he intends his jewellery to serve not merely as beautiful objects, but talismans that deliver “psychedelic healing”. Famed for combining fine gemstones and precious metals with more obscure, artisanal or decorative materials, Lee recently executed one of his most remarkable concoctions yet.
