Jewellery designer Austy Lee creates an elegant homage to fantastic beasts of Japanese legend

Hong Kong jewellery designer Austy Lee can always be relied on to draw from extraordinary sources in pursuit of artistic inspiration. In his past jewellery collections, Lee’s interest has been piqued by everything from the gods of Norse mythology to Mongolian falconry, psychedelic rock, eroticism and 1970s punk culture. For his latest creation, the Sandadoragonboru Brooches from the Furinkazan Collection, Lee’s imagination was fired by the mythical dragons of Japanese folklore—highly appropriate subject matter as we enter the lunar Year of the Dragon. Dragons, or nihon no ryu, have long played a starring role in Japanese mythology, and share numerous similarities with the giant, scaly beasts featured in tales from China, believed to be the original source of dragon legends.
