FOLLOWING A CHANGE IN REGULATIONS in 2016, a complete ban on the sale of all ivory (except antique pieces dating from before 1925) in Hong Kong finally came into effect on December 31 after a five-year grace period that allowed traders to sell off their existing stock. From 2016 to 2021, 16.6 tonnes of ivory were sold, according to local media. Veteran traders lamented the ban—Hong Kong ivory shops still collectively have 47.1 tonnes of the controversial material in stock—as well as the death of the craft of ivory carving.
