Making a List

The last time Tatler Hong Kong published its annual guide to the 500 most important figures in society was in December 2019, a copy of which—called The A List—was presented to me when I joined the company the following month to familiarise myself with “Who’s Who in Hong Kong”, as the headline on the cover definitively declared. As a cultural artefact, it was truly fascinating, a directory of the families behind many of the city’s biggest hotel empires, shipping companies, property developers and arts institutions, but I didn’t really understand its purpose. Digging into the archives, I looked through 25 years of lists, and noticed very little had actually changed among the 450-500 honourees beyond the arrival of a new generation, and the departure of those deceased or scandalised or otherwise…
