As one year ends and thoughts turn to the next, many seek guidance for what is to come. Hong Kong is a city of contrasts, and nothing exemplifies this notion as much as the superstitions still underpinning much of modern life. While exploring Temple Street Market during summer weekends, photographer Dickie Fowler, who goes by the pseudonym Dickie Suzuki, began taking pictures of the fortune-telling tents that line the streets. “I became particularly enamoured with the colour palettes, textures and ancient Chinese mystical symbolism all intertwined with an aspect of sideshow entertainment,” he says.“The images speak volumes about the society, time and place they exist in, evoking superstition, hope, tradition and some loneliness.” These kerbside clairvoyants impart wisdom on everything from selecting an auspicious date for a life event, whether…
