UCCA CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART GALA

Art patrons, collectors and curators flocked from around Asia to attend the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art gala in Beijing—but it was Shanghai that was on guests’ minds. At the black tie dinner, Philip Tinari, director of UCCA, announced that the Beijing museum is opening a 54,000sqft satellite space in Shanghai’s Jing’an District in 2021. The outpost will be UCCA’s second outside the Chinese capital, following hot on the heels of the 2018 opening of UCCA Dune, a museum buried beneath the sand in the seaside city of Beidaihe. “It is an interesting opportunity to start to think about ourselves as an institution working not on a local scale, but on a national scale,” Tinari said after the announcement.
