Whether you’re a connoisseur or new to the inner workings of mechanical watches, it’s always impressive to see a perpetual calendar in action as it counts from seconds to leap-year cycles. It’s the most intricate of the complications to design and assemble, and needs adjusting only once a century. One of the finest examples is A. Lange & Söhne’s Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon. This tour de force brings together a chronograph, perpetual calendar with moonphase display and a tourbillon, set against a silver and black dial. Baume & Mercier, meanwhile, shows that it has indeed arrived with the addition of a perpetual calendar to its Clifton series, presented on an opaline dial in a red gold case.
