Founded as King’s College almost 200 years ago, the university was granted its royal charter by King George IV. Renamed the University of Toronto in 1849, it has been home to a variety of notable intellectual figures, including influential Canadian literary theorist Northrop Frye and philosopher Marshall McLuhan. Major advances achieved by research carried out at the university include the discovery of insulin, the creation of the first electronic heart pacemaker, the development of the single-lung transplant and the discovery of the gene responsible for the most severe form of Alzheimer’s disease. More recent achievements include the discovery of the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis and the carrying out of the world’s first nerve transplant.
