A new generation of luxury hotels are opening in Tokyo for travellers who enjoy unique design, connection to culture and occasional mischief

For a city that welcomes as many visitors as Tokyo, its hotel options have long been surprisingly limited. Travellers had the choice of splashing out on high-end hotels that leaned towards more traditional ideas of luxury—from international players like The Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental, to Japanese stalwarts like The Okura—or staying at business hotels that offered little more than the basics. Until now, there was little to fill the gradient in between. But that’s changing with the opening of hotels that are defining a new generation of luxury hospitality.
