Having worked at established galleries, two Hong Kong-based gallerists set up their own art space Podium to spotlight underrepresented female and LGBTQ+ artists

The afternoon sun bounces off the old, lime green terrazzo floor tiles at Podium, an art space opened five months ago in a quiet Wong Chuk Hang factory building designed to feel more like a studio than a typical gallery. Its founders, Charlotte Lin and Cusson Cheng, decided to retain most of the industrial unit’s original interior design to distinguish themselves from a white cube gallery. “We don’t want people to feel intimidated when they step inside,” Cheng says. “We don’t have white walls. We have windows with natural sunlight. It’s very serene here.” The space’s friendly, cosy aesthetic is symbolic of Podium’s vision: to offer an inclusive contemporary art platform for underrepresented emerging and mid-career artists, especially those with, according to its website, “creative practices that reflect idiosyncratic aesthetics…
