Cities can be the loneliest places. Amid frenetic streets and blazing billboards, their human inhabitants live increasingly disparate lives. “You can be lonely anywhere, but there is a particular flavour to the loneliness that comes from living in a city, surrounded by millions of people,” wrote British author Olivia Laing in The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone. In this self-portrait, A Moment Apart, available as an NFT on the platform Foundation, Elaine Li captures a melancholic moment as a lone subject gazes upon Hong Kong’s neon skyline.
