With its glowing tendrils and otherworldly ultraviolet hues, the nudibranch captured by Stephen Lau offers a captivating glimpse into the biodiversity beneath the ocean surrounding Hong Kong. There are 2,000 known species of these marine molluscs, sometimes referred to as “sea slugs” for their soft-bodied, jelly-like forms, and they are most commonly found in tropical waters where they feast upon algae, sponges, coral and barnacles. By day, Lau is a divemaster and speedboat captain. Fifteen years ago, he tried scuba diving for the first time and his instructor showed him a picture of a pygmy seahorse. “I was amazed,” he says. He acquired a waterproof case for his camera and dipped beneath the waves to start snapping sea creatures himself. His craft takes patience, but Lau has a motto: “You…
