ONE LAST TIME The Prague Astronomical Clock, also known as the Orloj, is a remarkable piece of mediaeval engineering and design. Installed in 1410 at the Old Town Hall, it remains the oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world. Crafted by master clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň and astronomer Jan Šindel, the Orloj’s intricate mechanisms include an astronomical dial, a calendar dial and moving statues of the Twelve Apostles, the primary disciples of Jesus. The astronomical dial showcases the positions of the Sun and Moon, zodiac signs and detailed astrological information. Below it, the calendar dial displays the day and month.
