Long Beach in New York State lives up to its name. A spectacular three and a half miles of golden sand on the Atlantic coast, it’s the perfect place to stroll and unwind. Only, for a beachcomber on Monday 8 June 1931, a morning walk along the shoreline was to end in horror. There, lying in the sand, was the body of a dark-haired young woman. Her dress wasn’t torn, but her underwear was missing. And even though she must have been in the water for a while, she was still beautiful. An autopsy showed she had drowned. However, she had bruises and abrasions on her body that were most probably caused before her death. Sand in her lungs indicated she may have drowned close to the shore, and there…
