Sitting by the hospital bed, I reached out for my son Colin's hand. ‘How are you feeling?' I asked, giving it a squeeze. Colin was in hospital recovering from an operation to put metal pins in his leg. He had a condition called Stickler syndrome which affected his joints, and doctors had been trying to straighten out his limbs so he could walk better. I was expecting Colin to say he was in pain but otherwise OK, so his reply came as a huge shock. ‘I died and came back,' Colin croaked, his eyes wide. My mouth dropped open with shock. ‘You what?' I gasped. Colin explained that, shortly after the operation, he'd been in loads of pain and passed out, before suddenly finding himself floating outside his own body.…
