A DATE with DEATH It's Christmas Eve 1942. Film star Bette Davis is joking around on the stage of a nightclub with Santa Claus, who just happens to be the actor and comedian Eddie Cantor. Enjoying the show, which includes appearances from many other stars, are hundreds of servicemen and women. Later, they will enjoy the hospitality on offer, such as food and drink (no alcohol), and, if they are lucky, even dancing with the stars themselves. Everything is free. The only entry ticket the service personnel need is their uniform. This was the famous Hollywood Canteen, which was co-founded by Bette Davis and actor John Garfield.
