Mandy doesn’t read your letters in advance. She is given only your first name and relationship to the person you’d like to speak to in Spirit Dear Liz, It was still dark outside, hours until the sun would come up, when the phone rang. I rushed to answer it. On the other end was someone from the hospital in Grimsby where Mum was seriously ill. My stomach lurched as I braced myself for what was to come… ‘I’m sorry,’ came the gentle voice at the end of the line. ‘Your mum passed away in the night.’ It was 1 December 2021 and we’d already been expecting the worst after Mum had been admitted to hospital with Covid, along with a whole list of other illnesses.
