It's the very heart of vampire country, where wolves howl, creepy castles loom on hilltops and undead spirits are rumoured to roam when night falls. The folklore of Transylvania, a mountainous region in central Romania, talks of entities called strigoi, terrifying ghouls who rise from the grave to suck their victims’ blood. They are said to shapeshift into animal form, are repulsed by garlic and can only be killed when villagers dig up the body and stab it through the heart with a wooden stake. And Transylvania, which means ‘beyond the forest’, is the birthplace of the real-life Dracula, a bloodthirsty 15th century ruler thought to have inspired Bram Stoker's classic 1897 vampire novel.
