Smiling, I sat back on the sofa and gazed out at the night sky. It was 1982, it was my birthday (12 September) and my wife Margaret and I had just settled into our rented holiday home in Malaga, Spain. ‘Just look at that view,’ I said. ‘Gorgeous, isn’t it?’ For a while, we just sat there in blissful silence, taking it all in. But soon enough, I was distracted by a strange clicking sound. ‘Can you hear that?’ I asked Margaret. She nodded. ‘Where’s it coming from?’ ‘I don’t know,’ I said, standing up and walking around slowly. It seemed to be coming from the corner of the living room, but there was nothing there apart from a rickety old stool. As I got nearer, the noise grew louder.…
