Was danger lurking behind that door?

Setting down my bag, I breathed a sigh of relief. My husband and I were on a sightseeing tour of the French WWI and WWII battlefields. Both of us were history buffs with a particular interest in the world wars and we’d just arrived at our hotel in Ypres. The hotel had been bombed during the war and rebuilt in the late ’40s. It had an old, musty smell about it and the furniture was simple and rustic. ‘I’ve allocated you number 13,’ said the receptionist. He seemed tense and I wondered if he was superstitious, but the number of the room didn’t bother me. It turned out it was right at the top of the house.
