It was 1.24am on 18 March 1990, and just another ordinary shift at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Set up in 1903 and named after its founder, the museum was like stepping back in time. The rooms, left just like they were a century ago, showcased some of the world’s most iconic paintings, sculptures and tapestries.
