Would you dare to accept a challenge to stay overnight in a pitch-black labyrinth of reputedly haunted underground caverns? That’s just what Tony Bayfield did back in April 1958, when he headed alone into the darkness of Chislehurst Caves, Kent. Tony, then 21, had taken on what was known as the ‘Chislehurst Caves Challenge’, which saw the owner of the caves offer £5 to anyone brave enough to spend the night in the maze of man-made tunnels. According to a newspaper article from the time, Tony, from south London, took a torch, candles, matches, sandwiches and a flask of tea into the spooky caves. To make sure he found his way back to the entrance, the caves’ owner had left a trail of flour on the floor of the passageways.…
