LIFESAVER Steve Bird had been suffering from asthma for many years when he was diagnosed with a chest infection in 2013. Shortly after, struggling to breathe, he had to phone an ambulance. Kevin Perera was the first paramedic on the scene and started to treat Steve, who was taken to hospital, transferred to intensive care and put in an induced coma. He was in hospital for two and a half months and was diagnosed with double pneumonia. Steve survived, and three years later attended a Lung Foundation event.
