I was watching the music program Rage when the song Treaty by Yothu Yindi came on. The singers were performing in traditional Aboriginal garb, accompanied by the didgeridoo. At 10 years old, I was mesmerised. “I’d love to explore the outback,” I announced to my parents. “Plenty of it in your backyard, mate,” my dad remarked. He wasn’t wrong. Dad was a farmer, and we lived on a large property in western Queensland, but whenever I saw the Northern Territory on TV, I wanted to go. Once I’d left home and saved up some money, I finally got the chance. At 25, I drove to Darwin, then visited Uluru, transfixed by the colours and feel of the land.
