Battlefield trauma care is by its very nature dangerous for both the wounded and the caregivers. While a caregiver was attending a wounded American soldier on a contested battlefield, the casualty was struck and killed by another bullet that passed through the clothing of the medic. The close call wasn’t in Iraq, Inchon or Iwo Jima, but in the United States during the Civil War, and the caregiver was Clara Barton, who went on to establish the Red Cross. In WWII, the Corpsmen for the Navy and Marines, as well as the combat medics for the U.S. Army, were better trained than Clara Barton but still cared for the wounded under fire while taking heavy losses carrying out their duties.
