With both American and British troops at a disadvantage against the improved Mauser 7x57mm rifles during the Boer and Spanish/American Wars at the beginning of the 20th Century, they each scrambled to equip themselves with new, improved powerful weapons. The U.S. developed the 1903 Springfield in .30-06 to replace the .30-40 while the British soon designed the P-13 Enfield in the then new .276 Enfield caliber to replace the .303, and asked Remington Arms to produce the rifle. With time running out, the British scrapped the experimental .276 round and asked Remington to make the P-13 in .303 for which they had millions of rounds of ammunition.
