It’s a cold Thursday night in Torquay when, by chance, I run into Noa Deane at a bar. By this point, the beers are drinking themselves. Earlier that day, Noa, Ben Howard and Noa’s Hawaiian mate, Bryce surfed a left slab down the coast. Ten-foot. Howling offshore winds, dry reef, the only guys out. And they got royally flogged. Only one wave was made all day, and they spent more time on the reef than in the water. It seemed like a write-off, but in Noa’s eyes, it was one of the best days surfing he’s ever had.
