It’s been sunny for an hour; a shower looms from the sou’-east. The billy boils. An old school Northern Rivers winter has repeated for weeks. Damper cools by the small fire. Thick cuts of jewfish sit crisped black on sticks next to it. Flies laze about. Dave has raised the mid-afternoon fare. A few metres away one catamaran hull sits low in three slings in a long and narrow split shed, blocked off from sou’-east squalls but open to nor’-west light. Time and motion of this day in the life of Dave and Torren and friends has repeated for weeks: work stint then rustic food, couple more hours, then rest.
