One winter morning early last year, I found myself having coffee with Christa Funk. I’d never met her before, but boy, was I was in for a ride. Diminutive in stature, giant personality. Christa lives in Hawaii, where she’s made a name for herself swimming out into the alpha lineup at Pipeline to shoot photos on the biggest days, one of a handful of women to do so. As we chat, she’s riotously unfiltered and swears like a sailor, which, it turns out, she’d been in a previous life. We spend an hour laughing about life in Hawaii in a way you generally can’t laugh about life in Hawaii. Generally, it’s all too intense.
