Sam McLennan is on Flinders Island, sheltering from a wild week of gale-force west winds, waiting for them to back off before he makes a run for it, north across Bass Strait. The voyage is treacherous enough, before you even consider how Sam is about to do it. The Tasmanian surfer is sailing from Hobart to Sydney in a raft made entirely from marine rubbish – three-quarters of it plastic from storm-damaged salmon farms.
