It’s only after I get off the phone with Sam Jones that it dawns on me. For half an hour, we’ve just talked about the wave he loves, the wave where he’s regarded as the best guy in the water, and he didn’t mention it by name, once. I’m not sure whether it’s superstition, or a reluctance to buy into the hype around the place, but he didn’t invoke the name ‘Deadman’s’, not once. But that’s also Sam’s style. I first ran into him by chance a few years back down at Shipstern on a late autumn morning.
