Doctor Cliff is taking a drive down memory lane, through the back streets of Hilo, on Hawaii’s Big Island where he grew up. As we go, he points out a few historical sites that won’t show up in any tourist brochure. “We used to play in that crackhouse when we were kids,” he offers, pointing to a row of dilapidated houses. “I remember seeing used needles in there when we were running around.” Hilo is a world away from the gentrified Disneyland of Oahu’s North Shore. Racial lines are stark, underscored by class, trauma, poverty and social ills. No one is confused about who is and isn’t Native Hawaiian.
