THE DA reminding the ANC of the working class’s struggle in this stagnant economy has been one of the most peculiar and unexpected outcomes of the proposed 0.5% value-added tax (VAT) increase by the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana.
Disagreements were inevitable in the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) setup because of many pressure points and areas of divergence in policy.
However, the ANC’s neoliberal policies give the impression that the organisation is now determined to go back to its origins and work for the “well-heeled”, which at the time of its founding in 1912 included the middle class, traditional leaders, and the educated.
With the austerity measures in place, there’s no longer any pretence of caring for the poor. Across Europe, even in countries with stronger and bigger economies…
