A day on which to celebrate the joy of reading, writing books

TODAY is World Book and Copyright Day. South Africa joins more than 100 countries in observing the day on which prominent authors William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. On this day, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation’s General Conference in Paris in 1995 chose to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors. They promoted universal access to books as a wonderful innovation for sharing ideas beyond the boundaries of humanity, space, and time, as well as one of the most potent engines for poverty eradication and peacebuilding. This is the time to celebrate the work of our own authors, as well as acknowledging the need to cultivate a love for books and reading. The marking of this day is important considering…
