Judge Cameron said on the morning before he appeared before the portfolio committee, Lamola had joked with him about the escape, saying he thought “that I had smoked something”. As a result, Judge Cameron said he opted to leak information about the escape to the media after Lamola and the department had failed to give this information due attention. Lamola apologised and took responsibility, but said he would not resign. Phiri said the minister apologised “because he fully understands the severity of this incident”.
When asked if Lamola was considering doing things differently in terms of being seen as taking his job seriously, Phiri said: “Yes, the report of the department details comprehensive reforms.”
