Jooste ducks trial on Steinhoff fraud

Former Steinhoff chief executive Markus Jooste is in hot water with German authorities following his no-show appearance at a fraud trial. Jooste failed to appear in the Olden- burg regional court on Tuesday for his trial after his lawyer told presiding Judge Christian Weigmann that this was due to missing travel documents allegedly held by South African authorities. Jooste’s lawyer claimed that his client was unable to appear because of his fears of being arrested if he tried to leave South Africa. The relevant authorities later denied Jooste’s lawyer’s words, and the prosecutor rejected the explanation. Public prosecutor Frank Lohmann said that the accused had enough time to locate his missing documents for the April 17 trial date, which was announced in January.
