Municipalities confront Eskom’s ‘unaffordable’ electricity price

Fed-up municipalities across the country are fighting the National Energy Regulator of SA’s (Nersa’s) decision to allow Eskom to increase electricity prices by up to 20%. The SA Local Government Association (Salga), the representative body of the country’s 257 metropolitan, district and local municipalities, believes the tariff increases are unconstitutional, unsustainable and unaffordable and that Nersa’s approval of the tariff hikes should be reviewed and set aside by the North Gauteng High Court. In January, Nersa approved Eskom’s application to increases electricity prices by 18.65% in 2023/24 and 12.74% in 2024/25. The power utility had applied for a tariff increase of 32% in 2023/24 and 9% in 2024/25. Salga then consulted municipalities and made written submissions to Nersa rejecting the proposed increases.
