THE power struggle between Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande and his deputy, Buti Manamela, has become a mini-war and divided the staff. Explosive email messages between Nzimande and Manamela seen by the Sunday Independent reveal a serious spat between the two SACP leaders. The Sunday Independent also listened to a recording of an urgent meeting Nzimande had with the communication team from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), held in Pretoria on March 27, where he castigated the team for constantly giving more coverage to Manamela than him, as “the executive authority of this department”.
