PIEVE DI CADORE, 1489 CIRCA - VENEZIA, 1576 La biografia di Tiziano Vecellio fu inserita solo nella seconda edizione delle Vite. Vasari lo definisce il pittore «più eccellente » di tutti gli artisti veneti che comunque, nella sua concezione, erano inferiori ai toscani e ai romani. Pur riconoscendo il valore indiscutibile di Tiziano, lo riteneva carente nel disegno, così come tutta la scuola veneta (aveva, per esempio, una forte idiosincrasia per Tintoretto). Scrive infatti che i pittori veneti, «per non avere studio di cose antiche, usavano molto […] il ritrarre qualunque cosa facevano dal vivo, ma con maniera secca, cruda e stentata».
