NONOSTANTE siano state composte nell'VIII secolo a.C., l’Iliade e l’Odissea rievocano la società micenea alla fine dell'Età del bronzo, e i signori della guerra achei vi compaiono come re delle antiche città. Per questo gli archeologi hanno collegato alcuni dei siti micenei da loro scoperti ai personaggi di Omero. Schliemann, per esempio, riteneva di aver trovato il tesoro di Atreo, la tomba di Clitennestra e la tomba di Egisto a Micene, mentre a Pilo fu rinvenuto il cosiddetto palazzo di Nestore, scavato dall'archeologo Carl Blegen nel 1939.
