UNO DEI DOCUMENTI PIÙ RIVELATORI del Medioevo è la lettera indirizzata dal monaco Bernardo di Chiaravalle (uno dei fondatori dell’ordine cistercense) a Guglielmo, abate di Saint-Thierry. In essa critica aspramente le arpie, le sirene e le chimere che decoravano i chiostri perché, secondo lui, servivano solo a distrarre dalla meditazione. Scritto intorno al 1127, quando la scultura romanica era in pieno sviluppo, questo documento dovrebbe dimostrare che il simbolismo in genere attribuito ai rilievi di capitelli e mensole di quell’epoca è probabilmente molto forzato, poiché spesso erano solo il frutto del capriccio e dell’immaginazione degli scultori.…
