Quando, nel 49 a.C., Giulio Cesare attraversò il Rubicone e marciò su Roma con il suo esercito per prendere il potere, sapeva che si sarebbe trovato di fronte una delle figure più forti e popolari della politica romana dei decenni precedenti: Gneo Pompeo Magno. Non c’era odio tra loro. In un certo senso, avevano molte cose in comune. I due avevano molte cose in comune: avevano condiviso il potere durante il primo triumvirato (60-53 a.C.) ed erano diventati parenti attraverso Giulia, la figlia di Cesare, che aveva sposato Pompeo.
