Le prime a sfoggiarlo in pubblico furono attrici e ballerine come Mata Hari, Isadora Duncan ed Eleonora Duse. Negli anni venti del XX secolo invece il Delphos divenne improvvisamente popolare e s'impose come abito di gala.
