Director Valerie Weiss discusses her Star Trek: Strange New Worlds review on “Ad Astra per Aspera”

Stepping onto the futuristic Toronto sets of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for your first gig with the storied sci-fi franchise could be a daunting endeavor, but veteran TV director Valerie Weiss hunkered down to boldly conduct one of the most compelling chapters of the sophomore season. Weiss was the orchestrator of Strange New Worlds’ engaging courtroom outing, “Ad Astra per Aspera”, which revolved around Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), who was on trial for illegally concealing her heritage as a genetically-altered Illyrian. Its title is taken from Starfleet’s founding motto for its intrepid cosmic explorers and translates into “To the stars through hardship”. The superb writing, courtesy of Dana Horgan, examines prejudice within the halls of Starfleet as Number One presents her case, defended by the counsel of childhood…
